The "No-knees-over-the-feet"-thing in regards to squatting is a bro-myth. You really want to try to keep the back up as well the knees back if you'd like to develop the hamstring and ab awesomeness required for even a simple gymnasitc tuck-up. From what I know (very little compared to some of the very knowledgeable people) they probably won't be too bad for you (unless you're obese, but then you probably won't be able to them period). Long story short: the "rules" aren't set in stone, the Hindu squat isn't too bad, but it's not a great exercise to do.

However, it's more of an endurance thing, and can't be done progressively; Hindu pistols sound like the best way to lose your knees to me. Nothing like a great exercise that requires zero equipment and virtually no space. I've even done them in the handicap stall of a bathroom in airports when I absolutely must get in a quick workout.
